We do not not know of a customer who has gotten self-signed certificates working.
Note that you can purchase an SSL certificate for $9/year for up to 3 years from here:

Yes, you can use a self-signed certificate. Be certain that in addition to your SSL certificate that you have a "root certificate" (aka: CA Root Certificate Bundle or a "bundled root").
